Drop down the lid, and it is gone again. It’s like magic.

Best of luck with your computer troubles! About once a year I have to get my Powerbook (also 2005) out to use it for whatever reason and I never look forward to how slow it is for everything. Hard to believe what we used to put up with.
I’m seriously tempted to look for a desk like that after my next move…

These desks don’t seem to come along very often, so I wish you the best! Well, since I wrote this blog my Powerbook has also come unstuck. So I’m using my iPad as a laptop – which is a fair bit better than the PB to be honest.

Too bad your computers failed you right when you needed it for your application. Murphy’s law I guess. Always break down at the most awful timing.

Indeed. Now I have to pay to replace them, but I’m waiting on the outcome of some big changes that are happening here. It looks like we might be looking at that overseas option again. Eeep!

ahh, yeah – they go down at the worst times. the older laptop i keep in reserve usually comes out 3 or 4 times a week for simple tasks that I can do in Linux. That machine is over a decade old too, but the lightweight OS keeps it very useful.

I have thought of going the Linux route. I have another windows based lappy here of equal vintage, but I just don’t have the time to fiddle with the linux world at the moment.

Ahhhh. I’m sure there’s desks like this all over the USA. Shouldn’t be too hard to find. Just glad the desk cost a lot less than a new computer.

The 2005 PB is widespread then. The last year or so it’s become harder to use for any web use. Still fast and nice machine for local work, but the internet has moved on and left it behind. Even Omniweb is no longer the solution.
(Strange really; web-pages still contain only so many pixels, yet seem to take oodles more processor power and bandwidth than 10 yrs ago.)

It is a brilliant little machine for writing, and ‘Scrivener’ still works super-fast on it. But connecting online, or even handling email is a chore. There’s been a heavy increase in the amount of extra stuff running in the background of a website, and even then if you go through google and such-like it adds javascript on top. The days of pure HTML are gone.
